Word Smith is a local multiplayer fighting game made for the Ludum Dare 32 game jam. The game pits two knights with conventional weapons against each other in a fight to the death. The weapon you get it based on the name you gave your sword. Different lengths of swords mean different types of play.

Erik’s notes

This was my first Ludum Dare. I was invited by Phil to join him on his team to make a game at the Ludum Dare. If I hadn’t been invited, I probably wouldn’t have participated. Our team consisted of 2 artists, 1 programmer, and 1 part time audio artist. Phil came up with the idea (if I remember correctly), and Yael just wanted to do the backgrounds with markers and scan it into the game. The animations was made with vector art.

I usually set a goal for myself for game jams. In this game jam, my goal was to do a lot of tweeting, and sharing my development:

I also did a lot of work with the unity animator, and was really not a fan of it. Maybe next time, the artists will integrate the assets themselves.

Oh yea, as an extra feature we added text-to-speech (on windows builds) so that the knights swords would get announced before the match started. This was done by using Googles text-to-speech RESTful API, which might not work anymore.
